To some people, whether you’re talking about installing a basic fence, privacy fence or security fence, this barrier is strictly utilitarian. It provides a clear demarcation between properties or it encloses pets or children in a yard. It serves its purpose, and nothing more. Aesthetics is not a main concern or one at all. That is completely acceptable, say if you’re looking into institutional fencing such as in schools, playgrounds or other large fields. In that case, you’ll probably want something affordable and functional like the basic chain link fencing.
In other instances, people put the appearance high on the priority list along with functionality. This is often the case in residential fencing. Homeowners tend to want a beautiful addition to their homes, or at the very minimum something that doesn’t drag down the look of their property. Here, we have many options to choose from, ranging in price, upkeep, features and durability. Examples are wood, metal, vinyl or composite fencing. We can also discuss with you the general upkeep of your fence to maintain its function and beauty.
Don’t forget, our fence contractors also build and install structures that can be added to your home, business or special event such as gazebos, pergolas, arbors and trellises. These make a beautiful backdrop in photographs, but beautify the space wonderfully.
Our fence and deck builders are not only concerned about the beauty of the product, we care just as much about the quality of installation. We have many years of experience in our industry, backed by glowing accolades about how stable and durable our fences and decks are.

We are so happy to be serving the beautiful City of Guelph, with a population of around 135,000 and growing every year. Situated close to neighbouring cities like Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, it’s a vibrant town rich in culture, attractions and annual festivals. Nicknamed the “royal city”, Guelph is a city many people are proud to call home, and one we are proud to serve. Because Guelph is located in Southern Ontario, we are subjected to everchanging or polarizing weather - from torrential rain and snowstorms to - 30 degrees all the way to +30 weather on opposite seasons, and even drastically different weather within the same day, you will need a strong, sturdy enclosure that can hold up to these constantly changing conditions. For example, the right size and type of posts must be installed for the adjacent fence to provide the stability and strength, regardless of the quality of the fence boards themselves.

How do i choose between wood, composite, vinyl or chain link?
Here are some considerations when trying to decide on which fencing material to use: 1) What materials are your neighbours using? If they all have wood fencing, selecting a chain link fence for your backyard may look out of place; 2) What's your budget? If you have a limited budget or you need coverage for a large yard, knowing your budget may eliminate some pricier materials such as composite or cedar wood; 3) Are you looking for an affordable material for NOW, or one that can last for many years, thus resulting in better value over many years? If the latter, a seemingly expensive material like cedar or composite may seem out of reach, but if it's in your current budget, you may be saving money in the long run due to their remarkable longevity and lower maintenance requirements. The best thing would be to talk to your local fence contractor in Guelph (such as Guelph Fence) to discuss your options based on your budget and preferences.
There are so many contractors out there - how do i choose the right fence installer or deck builder?
History is a good indication of a contractor's quality and popularity. For example, you can look at the work done for previous clients, either through references or looking at actual fence work (if it's visible from the front of the property). You can also ask the contractor for any warranties if something were to happen to your newly installed fence, how would they rectify the situation? This could give you additional peace of mind.
How do i know if my fence needs a repair or a replacement?
A rough visual inspection might clue you in on whether a fence is in obvious need of a replacement. However, a seemingly simple repair job may reveal bigger underlying problems. If a fence is leaning, for example, it may not be obvious to some, but it reveals a lack of foundational integrity that a simple repair job will only temporarily fix. Give Guelph Fence a call for a free assessment and estimate and we will advise you of the best course of action for your particular property and situation.
how long does it take to install a fence?
This is dependent on the linear feet of installation, the complexity of the job, and Mother Nature. The number of days of actual labour may range between one to three days, but the project may be completed in a week or so if there are material shortages, or inclement weather (for example torrential rainstorms, extreme heat alerts, or even a frozen ground if the beginning of spring hasn't thawed the ground yet), this may delay the project and is out of the fence contractor's control.
how much does a fence installation cost?
This is a broad question, so there's no blanket answer. However, these are the factors that affect the final cost: a) material - there's a stark difference in price between chain link fencing and say cedar fencing, b) linear footage - the longer the fence, the more you pay, although price per linear ft tends to go down as the length increases, c) complexity of the job - this could mean additions such as gate, or building a fence on an uneven ground.
Do i have to contact the city before i start digging for a new fence installation?
That's absolutely right. If you're looking to create a new dig for a new fence install or a fence replacement that digs into new ground, you'll have to contact Ontario One Call for locates, and this will essentially notify the owner of the infrastructure that may be affected. Our fencing contractors at Guelph Fence can assist you with this process.
do i need a permit to build a fence in guelph?
You do not need a permit for a fence installation on your property. However, the fencing does have to abide by certain height requirements according to the City of Guelph's bylaws, and some of the maximum heights can range from 0.8 meters to 2.5 meters, depending on the zone surrounding your property. You would, however, require a permit for a pool fencing installation or a deck build that is over 2 feet above finished ground.
can my neighbour build a fence on the property line?
According to the Line Fences Act in Ontario, residents in municipalities like Guelph are allowed to erect a fence on the property line to demarcate the boundary. If this is a decision made by a neighbour, you and your neighbour need to discuss sharing the costs and other responsibilities for maintaining the fence (i.e. sharing the expenses for fence repairs). The Line Fences Act exists to facilitate any dispute of a fence installation on property lines.
Is there anything i need to know before installating a pool fence?

what should we look for a in a fence company?
Let’s touch on a few things that make a great fence contractor. The best fence contractors should:
- Be organized: this is not usually on the forefront of our mind, but is definitely a quality a contractor in any industry should possess. We’re talking about things like showing up to appointments on time, having all the necessary equipment, not causing unnecessary delays, and not confusing your project with other clients’ projects (you’d be surprised how this actually happens!) Organized deck and fence installers simply respect their customers and their time and money. A lack of organizational skills can possibly be innate, but it also shows a lack of prioritization of the customers’ needs. Time is treated with disregard, and this can translate to sloppy craftsmanship. Now, in terms of project delays, this happens often, and sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances beyond our control. However, this brings us to the next point.
- Have good communication skills: from the first point of contact on the phone or email to the completion of the job, the fencing contractor should be able to relay specific pieces of information to the client regularly. Let’s take a typical scenario of where things can go wrong. You call around different fencing and decking companies, and decide on one and set up an appointment. The contractor forgets to show up because they thought they were supposed to go to another house at that time slot (shows lack of organization here!)...that’s fine, people make mistakes. You then discuss with your contractor your fencing needs and decide on a material. They arrive on the mutually agreed day, and they use the wrong material, and install the wrong colour. You tell them that’s not what you previously selected, and they rectify the situation. They install the proper fence, but the project is delayed and you’re about to go on vacation, so you’re anxious. They don’t tell you how long it will take, so you’re left guessing and with no clear answers to your inquiry. Finally, the fencing installation is complete. You’re given the invoice which is a lot higher than the previous quote. The fence installer surprises you with additional expenses, but this wasn’t clearly communicated to you in the beginning. You pay the bill, but you’re left disappointed with a bad taste in your mouth. You’re probably not going to give them any glowing reviews after this since you’ve been left with bad service with underlying bad communication. This scenario is not that uncommon and many home and business owners unfortunately have to deal with this. Our Guelph fence contractors pride ourselves in our great communication skills and know that this is the basis of establishing trust and confidence with our clients. This leads us to the next point.
- Good references: sometimes, you just don’t know what you’re getting with a contractor. If you’re looking for a fence builder to take on an important fence install project, your mind can be put at ease if you ask them for a couple of references, particularly in the type of job you’re seeking. For example, if you’re looking to install vinyl fencing around your yard, ask for references who have installed vinyl fencing as well. This way, you can get a second and third opinion about the contractor in question. By the way, our customers love our work, so we’re confident you’ll be pleased with our deck and fencing services as much as our past clients did.
Really appreciate the top notch workmanship and service on our pressure treated fencing - highly recommend!
